How a Healthy Diet Impacts Cardiovascular Disease (CVD)
CVD has multiple risk factors, some that you can change and some that you cannot. Having a poor diet is one of those risk factors you can change. Not only is diet a risk factor but adopting a healthy diet can improve some of the other risk factors too. Dr. Alison Atrey will take you through establishing a good foundation on the Mediterranean diet, which focuses on a pattern of eating a large variety of whole foods (unprocessed) that are fresh and local whenever possible.
Dr. Alison Atrey
Dr. Atrey trained as a dietitian. She qualified from Kings College London in 1996 and has worked in clinical and research dietetics for over 20 years, specializing in Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) for a large majority of those. She worked in the CV Medicine department at Imperial College for over 17 years and it was here that she was able to develop her love for teaching and research. Dr. Atrey was the dietetic coordinator for EUROACTION (pan European RCT) and MyAction (Demonstration project within the NHS), supported the running of the EuroAspire and Aspire trials, and helped develop and run the master course in Preventive Cardiology. She then helped develop this master's course into the first blended learning medical master's at Imperial. Just before leaving Imperial, she was working on helping other masters move towards online learning.

Mindfulness: Living on Your Terms
To live is rebellion. To live freely and on one’s own terms is the ultimate form of rebellion in a world where conformity and not rocking the boat is valued. We have long been conditioned to prioritize the experience of others above our own, when in fact if we are taking care of everyone else thinking that we will be taken care of by that process, we are playing a game that will never end, and one that we will lose. This class will discuss the topic of personal power, how empowering ourselves is the best way to help others, and will include intentional breathing and identification of sensation, emotion and thought.

We are all stressed in one way, shape or form. The game of life, the managing of our bodies, our finances, our careers, and relationships will always present challenges that might initially instigate resistance or discomfort. We have long believed that the “just get on with it” approach was the most efficient way of managing stress, but what we now know is that through the mindful care and attention paid to what the stressors are, how they manifest in the body as sensation, and carefully holding space for the stressors themselves is the path not only through the stress, but through the process of managing all future stressors and difficulties. This class includes analytical meditation, intentional breathing and very light movement seated in a chair.

Mindfulness
Tuning into Sensation
Tuning into sensation is a mindfulness practice that asks us to pay attention to what is going on in our bodies. As our attention is often focused on external stimuli, Bram explains the benefits of checking-in to the feelings, tensions or stresses internally. Our minds will often tend towards what is more difficult for us to manage, rather than what feels good or is easier to manage. For example, in the case of chronic pain, our minds will often focus on those feelings of discomfort. Bram guides you through a short meditation practice where you can experience the relaxing benefits of tuning into and identifying different sensations in your body.
